WHAT IS CANCER
Cancer is a broad group of diseases that can start in almost any organ or tissue of the body when abnormal cells grow out of control. For instance, you might find it difficult to breathe if a tumor in your breast spreads to your lungs. In some types of blood cancer, abnormal cells in your bone marrow make abnormal blood cells that multiply uncontrollably. Normal blood cells are eventually displaced by the abnormal cells.
What is the difference between a normal cell and a cancerous/abnormal cell?
Normally, cells follow instructions provided by genes. Genes set down rules for cells to follow, such as when to start and stop growing. Cancerous cells ignore the rules that normal cells follow:
- Normal cells divide and multiply in a controlled manner. Cancerous cells multiply uncontrollably.
- Normal cells are programmed to die (apoptosis). Cancerous cells ignore those directions.
- Normal cells for solid organs stay put. All cancerous cells are able to move around.
- Normal cells don’t grow as fast as cancerous cells.

Signs and symptoms caused by cancer will vary depending on what part of the body is affected.

Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cells. Gene mutations: what do they do?
A gene mutation can instruct a healthy cell to:
1- Allow rapid growth. A cell can be instructed to grow and divide more quickly by a gene mutation. As a result, numerous additional cells with the identical mutation are produced.
2. Fail to stop uncontrolled cell growth: Normal cells know when to cease proliferating in order to achieve the ideal balance of each cell type. The tumor suppressor genes, which tell cancer cells when to stop growing, are lost in cancer cells. A tumor suppressor gene mutation permits cancer cells to proliferate and multiply.
3. Make mistakes when fixing faults in DNA. DNA repair genes search for and fix mistakes in a cell's DNA. A mutation in a DNA repair gene could prevent other errors from being fixed, which could cause cells to develop cancer.
These are the most prevalent mutations observed in cancer. However, cancer can also be caused by a wide variety of other gene abnormalities.
Why do gene mutations occur?
Gene mutations can arise from various causes, such as:
1- Gene mutations you're born with. You may be born with a genetic mutation that you inherited from your parents. This type of mutation accounts for a small percentage of cancers.
2- Gene mutations that occur after birth. Most gene mutations occur after you're born and aren't inherited. A number of forces can cause gene mutations, such as smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise.
Gene mutations occur frequently during normal cell growth. However, cells contain a mechanism that recognizes when a mistake occurs and repairs the mistake. Occasionally, a mistake is missed. This could cause a cell to become cancerous.
How do gene mutations interact with one another?
Both inherited and acquired gene mutations contribute to the development of cancer. For example, if you have a genetic mutation that predisposes you to cancer, you may still need one or more additional gene mutations to cause cancer; your inherited gene mutation may make you more susceptible to developing cancer when exposed to a particular cancer-causing substance.
